Eye Procedures With Dr. Edwin M. Schottenstein

One of the reasons why we at the practice of Dr. Edwin M. Schottenstein are such a proven choice when you’re looking for an ophthalmologist in NYC is because of our wide variety of high-quality eye procedures. Our eye doctor, Dr. Edwin M. Schottenstein is one of the top board-certified NYC ophthalmologists and is highly capable of tending to any and all of your visual needs. Among the many eye procedures that you’ll find in our Upper West Side office include the following.

Refractive Cataract Surgery

A cataract is the clouding of the lens in a patient’s eye, causing his or her vision to become blurry. Cataract surgery will remove this lens and replace it with an artificial lens, often referred to as an intraocular lens. We offer many different types of intraocular lenses, including monofocal, multifocal, toric, Crystalens, and Verisyse.

Limbal Relaxing Incisions

This is a procedure that’s used to correct corneal astigmatism by placing superficial incisions on the peripheral cornea. These small incisions will relax the curvature of the cornea, which will allow more light to accurately focus on the retina.

YAG Capsulotomy

YAG capsulotomy (sometimes known as posterior capsulotomy) is a painless and safe laser treatment that’s utilized to improve a patient’s vision after cataract surgery. After cataract surgery, many patients will suffer from blurred or hazy vision because the new lens has become cloudy as well. The YAG laser is able to create an opening in the center of the cloudy lens, which will cause the patient’s vision to clear up.

Cosmetic Eye Care

With our cosmetic eye care, we’re capable of treating the skin around the eyes and giving a patient a more youthful appearance. It’s natural that over time, cosmetic problems that include drooping upper eyelids and wrinkles around the eyes can develop. With our cosmetic eye procedures, such as brow lifts, Botox, and blepharoplasty, we can help treat these problems.

Dry Eye Procedures

As dry eyes are very common amongst adults, we offer a number of different dry eye treatments depending on the severity of the condition. For more mild cases of dry eye, we may recommend using artificial tears or a more potent prescription eye drop, such as Restasis or Xiidra. For those with more severe dry eye, we can perform punctal occlusion (where punctal plugs will be inserted into the tear drainage area to keep the tears in longer) or Meibomian gland canalization (where a canal will be inserted into the Meibomian gland so that it can function properly and keep the eye moister).

LipiFlow

LipiFlow is one of the most effective treatments that we offer for dry eyes. This is a simple and safe treatment that will apply controlled heat and pressure to the eye through a disposable eyepiece. This gentle pressure will help clear up the blocked glands and allow the natural production of oils to continue.

Other Eye Procedures

Your ophthalmologist in NYC is also capable of offering a plethora of other eye procedures that include the following:

  • LASIK – This treatment will correct refractive errors and clear up a patient’s vision by reshaping the cornea.
  • Photorefractive Karatectomy – This is a laser-assisted vision correction procedure that reshapes the cornea.
  • Conductive Keratoplasty – This is a non-invasive vision correction procedure, using focused radio waves instead.
  • Refractive Lensectomy – This is a surgical procedure that will correct refractive errors by replacing a patient’s natural lens with an intraocular lens.
  • PRELEX – This is similar to cataract surgery, but it’s used on patients who don’t have cataracts in order to improve their vision and eliminate the need for future cataract surgery.
  • Arbon Laser Trabeculoplasty – This can relieve intraocular pressure for those suffering from glaucoma.
  • Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty – This is another procedure used to relieve intraocular pressure, though it only targets specific cells.
  • Laser Iridotomy – This procedure will create a hole in the iris that will promote proper drainage access to a drainage canal that’s blocked by the iris.
  • Strabismus Surgery – This is a surgery that will help realign a patient’s eyes.
  • Retinal Laser Surgery – This surgery is used to treat diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and a number of other retinal problems.
  • Pterygium Surgery – This procedure is able to remove larger growths of fibrous tissues and blood vessels on the surface of the sclera that may interfere with a patient’s vision.
  • Chalzion Excision – This is a procedure that will remove a lump from the eyelid.
