Keep Your Eyes Healthy

Eye health is extremely important because we use our sight for everything. Dr. Schottenstein wants you to keep your eyes healthy and use proper eye care to keep them at their best for life. Comprehensive eye care is made up of mostly simple day-to-day activities like wearing sunglasses when it’s sunny and attending your regular eye exam with Dr. Schottenstein. Our eye professionals have put together a list of things you can do to keep your eyes healthy and seeing clearly.

Live a Healthy Lifestyle

Live a Healthy Lifestyle

Your overall health is incredibly important when it comes to your eye health, both are linked to the other. In order to live a healthy lifestyle, Dr. Schottenstein recommends eating a healthy balanced diet high in fruits and vegetables, participating in regular physical activity to stay in shape, and to stop smoking if you currently do. All three of these will help decrease your risk of macular degeneration, cataracts, and vision loss.

Protect Your Eyes

Throughout our daily activities, our eyes experience a lot of strain from looking at screens, sensitivity from LED lights and the sun, and risk eye injuries from playing sports. Our ophthalmologist recommends the following to protect your eyes and keep them healthy:

  • Wear Sunglasses: The sun can be quite damaging, even on cloudy days. Whenever you are outside, Dr. Schottenstein suggests wearing sunglasses to protect your eyes from the harmful sun rays.
  • Wear Protective Eyewear: If you play sports or work a job like construction or home repair, you should always wear protective eyewear. Even the smallest fragments of wood or glass can leave lasting damage on your eyes and eyesight.
  • Rest Your Eyes: Look away from your screen every twenty minutes. If you work on a computer every day, this is especially important to decrease your eye strain.
  • Contacts & Hygiene: If you wear contacts, Dr. Schottenstein wants to ensure you are taking the appropriate steps to practice proper eye hygiene. You should always wash your hands before and after taking a contact out or putting a contact in. Wash and rub your contacts based on their instructions to disinfect them regularly.

Regular Comprehensive Eye Exams

Apart from living a healthy lifestyle, it is extremely important to visit your local ophthalmologist regularly. A normal dilated eye exam can detect many eye diseases that often do not have symptoms. By seeing your eye doctor frequently, you can also discuss if there have been any changes in your vision, contacts, or eyeglasses and if you have any family history of specific eye disease. Dr. Schottenstein wants to be as preventive as possible when it comes to eye diseases and the best way to do this is through a regular eye exam.
