Here at the office of Dr. Schottenstein, we make your eye health our priority. We offer a wide range of efficient procedures and state-of-the-art technologies to make sure that your eyes can stay as healthy as they possibly can. However, caring for your eyes isn’t just something that’s limited to one of your eye exams at our Manhattan office; there are many things that you can do during your everyday life that can boost the health of your eyes. Here are just a few of them.

Eat Healthily

Eating well doesn’t just help your body out; it can help your eyes out as well. Some of the best nutrients to add to your diet are omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins C and E, lutein, and zinc. These can help stave off certain visual problems like macular degeneration and cataracts. Some of these nutrient-rich foods that we recommend include leafy vegetables, salmon, tuna, citrus fruits, eggs, beans, and nuts.

Take Breaks from Looking at Screens

While we’re all prone to becoming obsessed with what’s on one of our screens (whether it’s a TV screen, computer screen, or something else), it’s best to take breaks from it on a regular basis. Staring at a screen for too long can cause eyestrain, blurry vision, and even headaches. That’s why you should look away from the screen every 20 minutes for at least 20 seconds. It’s also beneficial to get up and take a short break every two hours or so.

Wear Sunglasses

We also recommend wearing sunglasses when you’re outside. If you’re exposed to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays for too long, you risk developing cataracts and macular degeneration. Certain pairs of sunglasses can actually block out just about all of these potentially harmful rays.

Don’t Smoke

Smoking makes you more likely to develop many visual and other medical problems. It can cause damage to your optic nerve as well as enhance the chance that you develop cataracts and macular degeneration.
