Research has indicated that diets full of certain nutrients like zeaxanthin, lutein, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, and zinc can help reduce your chances of having severe visual loss if you have age-related macular degeneration.    Some of the best ways to get these nutrients, include:

  • Carrots
  • Green Tea
  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Other leafy greens

Whether you get them from food or supplements, these nutrients will help promote healthy eyes

An important component of caring for your vision is protecting your eyes from injuries while on the job, playing sports, or doing certain chores around the house.Statistics show that wearing protective glasses regularly prevents approximately 90% of all eye injuries such as:

  • Scrapes on the cornea
  • Foreign objects in the eye
  • Infections from foreign bodies
  • Burns from chemical or radiation exposure

Keeping your eyes protected from the sun’s powerful UV rays can reduce potential damage to the eyes. Over-exposure to the sun can cause photokeratitis, which is like a sunburn on the eye, or more serious conditions like cataracts or macular degeneration.

When selecting sunglasses, we recommend choosing a pair that provides protection from both UV-A and UV-B rays. It is important to wear sunglasses not only on very sunny days, but even on cloudy days and in the winter as well. Wearing a hat, and minimizing sun exposure can also help reduce your risk from UV exposure.

As technology becomes increasingly more important in our lives, we find ourselves staring at a computer monitor for longer periods during the day, putting a lot of tension on our eyes. The resulting discomforts are sometimes referred to as computer vision syndrome (CVS). Though CVS hasn’t proven to cause permanent damage to the eyes, it can lead to eye irritation, blurred vision, headaches, and neck aches that can affect your performance at work or school, and how you feel in general.

There are several ways you can prevent CVS, including:

  • Working in a well-lit area
  • Adjusting the height and distance of the computer monitor to allow for optimum comfort
  • Improving your posture to reduce strain
  • Taking periodic breaks to rest your eyes

If symptoms persist after making these changes, you may need to contact our office for an adjustment in your eyeglass or contact lens prescription.

Regular comprehensive eye examinations are crucial to ensuring the overall health of your vision. Dr. Schottenstein is specially trained to detect, diagnose, and treat problems and conditions affecting the eyes. We recommend that you visit our eye doctor yearly, to maintain healthy vision.
