If you’ve been diagnosed with cataracts or have noticed changes in your vision, cataract surgery may help.

What Are Cataracts?

Cataracts refers to the gradual clouding of the lens of the eye that can happen with age. Cataracts develop slowly over time, usually beginning with a slight blurriness, but if left to progress without treatment long enough, cataracts can often lead to blindness. Cataracts are a very common eye condition and one of the leading causes of vision loss, especially for older adults. Thankfully, cataract surgery is a highly effective, reliable option for healing cataracts and restoring vision.

What Is Cataract Surgery?

Cataract surgery involves removing the clouded lens and replacing it, usually with an artificial implant called an elastic artificial intraocular lens (IOL). Cataract surgery is minimally invasive, requiring only a tiny incision, and the technologies and techniques involved have progressed to make it a safe, reliable procedure.

During cataract surgery, your NYC eye doctor starts by making a miniscule incision in the lens of your eye. This allows your ophthalmologist to use a specialized ultrasound wave device to break apart the clouded tissue, then carefully remove it. Once removed, your eye doctor inserts a small artificial intraocular lens to replace your natural lens. Just like your natural lens, the IOL focuses light within the eye, producing crystal clear, precise vision. IOLs can be designed to correct a number of specific vision problems, and your eye doctor will work with you to choose the one that’s best for you.

Recovering from Cataract Surgery

Because the incision required for cataract surgery is so small, recovery is generally very minimal. Most patients can get back to their normal routine within about two days, and patients often report only minimal discomfort or problems. However, all surgical procedures require some type of recovery, and it’s important to take steps to promote healing and healthy recovery:

  • Be sure to follow any post-surgical instructions given by Dr. Schottenstein
  • Make sure to follow any schedules we provide for medicated eye drops or other drugs
  • Avoid swimming or other water-related activities for at least 7 days after your surgery
  • Avoid strenuous exercise, bending, straining, or lifting anything heavy for 7 days after the surgery
  • If you notice any strange effects or discomfort, contact us right away to discuss the issue
