The Power Of Limbal Relaxing Incisions

Say goodbye to your astigmatism-correcting glasses! Limbal relaxing incisions allow ophthalmologists and eye surgeons, such as Dr. Schottenstein, to possibly rid you of your glasses even if you have a corneal astigmatism-either from cataract surgery, or otherwise. With limbal relaxing incisions, you gain the ability to see long distances without glasses through a simple, proven method at an affordable price.

WHAT ARE LIMBAL RELAXING INCISIONS?

An astigmatism is an irregular curvature on the front surface of the eye, which causes a person’s vision to be blurred. During traditional cataracts surgery, Dr. Schottenstein replaces the natural, clouded lens in the eye with an artificial lens that allows you to see more clearly. However, sometimes there is still room for improvement after cataract surgery. For those with an astigmatism, Limbal Relaxing Incision (LRI) is an eye procedure that corrects minor astigmatisms and allows those with astigmatisms to see without using corrective glasses.

Small incisions are made at the edge of the front of the eye to treat corneal astigmatism. These small incisions relax and release the curvature of the cornea, which then improves the ability for the eye to focus light and thereby rids your vision of blurriness or cloudiness. It is important to note that Dr. Schottenstein typically only recommends LRI to patients with minor astigmatisms.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF
LIMBAL RELAXING INCISIONS?

Through the optimization of the intraocular lenses (IOL), limbal relaxing incisions achieve vision correction. This eye procedure is typically less expensive than other vision correction surgeries, such as LASIK. Lastly, this procedure has a very quick recovery time and allows you to see results in as little as one day.

Do Limbal Relaxing Incisions Hurt?

No. This eye procedure does not cause any pain or discomfort to patients, as an eye anesthetic is placed on the eye prior to the surgery. This means you’re unable to feel any pain from the surgery, although you may feel some pressure. Beyond, as mentioned, this surgery has a great recovery time and allows you to get back to it, on average, within one day.

What Are The Risks Of Limbal Relaxing Incisions?

All in all, the eye surgery, LRI, is a fairly low risk eye procedure; however, there are some risks. These risks include: infection after the surgery, slight discomfort immediately after, or corneal perforation. Dr. Schottenstein always discusses these risks and preventative ways to avoid them with every patient before, and after the procedure.
